Good. Better. BEST!

Created on: 20 February 2008

Just when it seemed that Konsortium-Merino couldn’t possibly do any better, they again surpassed all expectations. The 201 rams on offer at their 14th production sale were all sold for an average price of R6 883, resulting in a new record turnover of R1 383 450.

This is the third time in a row that Konsortium-Merino has bettered the South African record for turnover from a Merino ram sale. The highest price was R31 000. Albert van Heerden from Van Vuurenshoek, Hofmeyr, Lourens van Heerden from Bella Vista, Tarkastad, and Michael Lord from Souverein, Hofmeyr, joined forces to purchase this silver merit ram.

Hennie Coetzee and Altus Geldenhuys from Steynsburg paid R27 000 for the second highest priced ram. Hot on their heels were the next 2 rams which fetched R25 000 each. The buyers were Kosie van der Merwe from Tweerivier, Sutherland and Neville Grobler from Zonderhout, Springfontein, respectively.

More than half the Konsortium rams sold for less than R7 000 each. In all, 31 rams went for R3 000 and less, 43 were sold for R3 100 to R5 000 and 59 fetched from R5 100 to R7 000. A total of 44 rams were sold for R7 100 to R10 000, 13 went for R10 100 to R15 000 and 11 were knocked down for higher than R15 000.

The 1 271 ewes on the auction were sold for an average price of R953 each, with the highest price of R1 750 per ewe for pregnant full mouth stud ewes. Konsortium’s highest average, prior to this sale, was R6 763 for 189 rams sold on their 13th production sale.

More than 300 visitors, from far and wide, attended the auction held on the 14th February. Being Valentines Day, also enticed a number of the fairer sex to attend the sale. The guests enjoyed the day in the coolth of the trees. During the auction a light shower of rain brought welcome relief from the Karoo heat.
