A weighty subject

Created on: 15 October 2003

One has good reason to grin when wethers average 59kg each and slaughter out 49% of their live weight. Even more so when you consider that this was achieved off natural veld. Willouw van Heerden, project manager of Konsortium-Merino, marketed 420 wethers in June 2003. This batch of mainly two- to four-tooth Merino′s (of which 100 wethers were six-tooth) weighed an average of 59kg each. Their average slaughter weight was 29kg each - almost 50% of their live weight.
